We are bombarded every day with toxins from the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink and the cosmetics we layer on our skin. These toxins, coupled with the stress of living can cause disease, chronic conditions and eventually death. The human body is a magical dwelling that can regenerate itself if it is given time and proper care. The food and medicine we put into our bodies will either build on the toxins we already have or help the body get rid of them. There are many herbs and essential oils that can help the detoxification process, allowing us to keep a healthy balance and live a long and happy life.
Lemon is a fantastic detoxifier. Adding ½ lemon to 16oz of water can aid in digestion, pumps antioxidants into the body, boosts immunity, prevents kidney stones and keeps the pH at an alkaline level. Although lemons are considered acidic, they are in fact alkalizing to the body. Lemon essential oil can be added to a diffuser to help detox the liver, digestive and the lymphatic systems.
Heavy metal toxicity is a major threat to certain chronic diseases, and they interfere with our metabolic processes. Cilantro and parsley both bind to heavy metals and rid the body of them. Using ¼ cup of leaves and stems each day for two weeks will help the liver remove the metals out safely. After two weeks you can increase the amount of herbs without causing the liver any problems from excess detoxification. Diffusing Rosemary and Juniper Berry essential oils can also aid in detoxification by helping to increase bile production, which metabolizes and detoxifies heavy metals in the blood.
There are so many medicinal herbs that work well in detoxifying the body. Dandelion Root, Burdock and Nettle are my top three. Dandelion Root stimulates the liver, helping to remove waste and toxins in the blood. Dandelion Leaf can also be used to help flush the kidneys of waste and contains nutrients that will replenish the body. Burdock Root is another blood and liver cleanser, but this herb has a direct impact on the skin and hair. It also stimulates lymphatic drainage, which is an important component to detox. Stinging Nettle has more minerals than any other herb and it can be used to aid all the organs that are involved in detoxification function better. Nettle supports the liver and has a diuretic effect that assists the kidneys in their role. All of these herbs can be used as tea or tincture.
Every little bit helps. From drinking a glass of lemon water or adding herbs into your diet each day will not just help with your physical health, you will also enjoy better sleep and concentration levels. As we age, keeping chronic conditions at bay should be on our list of priorities. I wish you all the very best!
