In my last blog a few weeks ago, I talked about the importance of staying hydrated, especially during the summer heat and after your workouts!
Drinking half your body weight in ounces of water is a great rule of thumb, but I wanted to take it a step further and explain WHY it’s so important and how sometimes plain water isn’t enough. Have you ever competed in a race, went for a long hike, or just went to bed at night and ended up with a horrible leg cramp? I know I have, and it is freaking awful! Leg cramps aka charley horses are actually why we created Charley (our magnesium sport gel/spray) in the first place because we were sick of cramping up during events!... more on this later!
When we sweat we lose nutrients, aka electrolytes, such as sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. These minerals are essential and when we don’t have enough of them in our system, this leads to cramping. Especially when we are exercising in the heat, we are really making ourselves prone to cramping. Exercise aside, if you are going about your day and only drinking coffee, sodas, and alcohol, your body is severely lacking in electrolytes and needs some replenishing!
